Hardwood Floor vs. Engineered Wood: A Comparative Analysis

February 28, 2024 · Sexton Home Improvement & Repairs

Choosing between solid hardwood and engineered wood comes down to where the floor is going and how you live. Both look beautiful — the differences are underneath.

Solid hardwood

Milled from a single piece of wood, solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, so it can literally last generations. The trade-off: it’s sensitive to moisture and humidity swings, so it’s not ideal for basements or over concrete slabs.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood is a real-wood veneer over a stable plywood core. That core resists the expanding and contracting that can gap or cup solid wood, which makes engineered a smart pick for basements, kitchens, and homes with big seasonal humidity changes. It can usually be refinished once or twice.

How to choose

  • Refinishing for decades? Solid hardwood.
  • Basement, slab, or high humidity? Engineered wood (or luxury vinyl plank).
  • Budget-conscious but want a real-wood look? Engineered often costs less installed.

The right floor also depends on proper subfloor prep — skip that step and even the best material can fail. We help homeowners weigh the options room by room and install it the right way.
